There’s a saying that prostitution is the oldest occupation there is. Well, like you might have guessed, porn has been around for pretty much forever as well, for as long as people could paint or carve images.
Pornography developed independently all over the world, so it’s difficult (if not impossible) to pinpoint where exactly it all started. Of course, we have civilizations that are more popular for their sexually explicit works, like the beautiful ancient city of Pompeii. Of course, it got destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. When the city was excavated centuries later, numerous lewd sculptures and frescoes depicting sex acts were found, often featuring intellectual and political elites of their time. By our modern standards, this could be comparable to trolling or maybe fantasy sex role-play.
Other forms of porn started to pop up during the Renaissance period, mainly in the form of nudist paintings that depicted sexual acts and suggestive material. Fast forward to the modern era, when the term pornography was officially used, porn started to crop up more than ever, not only in artwork, but also in literature.
As you can see, porn has always been heavily based on imagery. It was only natural that with the invention of film and cameras, adult content would be reproduced this way. Even up to the early 2000s, most professionally produced videos could only be accessed with a subscription. Hence, the majority of the population often found their fix with soft-core porn magazines like Playboy. When the internet became more popular, free porn websites, which were basically a large gallery of raunchy pictures, started popping up.
So how did porn videos come to be so popular? Well, as more porn websites were being created, there was an immense pressure for sites to compete and get more views than their peers. As such, more and more porn websites started to advertise tempting teasers of videos to entice potential customers into buying subscriptions. This method seemed to work well for them.
When YouTube was created, a lot of porn websites started to mimic its video sharing and uploading model. Hence, tube sites were born. They started out with re-uploaded and pirated copies of films and amateur porn videos, and a couple of these sites grew to be some of the biggest companies in the porn industry, namely Pornhub and RedTube. These websites have almost become synonymous with the entire porn industry itself, as they are the most popular distributors of porn videos, amassing an average of 20 billion views a year. These days, they offer not only videos but live video performances, cam-girl services, and even virtual-reality experiences.
This is how porn videos have trumped porn pictures by large margins. Obviously, many people still ogle porn pictures and they are still very popular. These days, with the advent of technology and readily available content, most people simply want to see more realistic and relatable booty bouncing and hardcore action without having to strain their imagination. Hence, the industry cheerfully caters to this demand.
Porn is only going to keep moving towards more realistic experiences as technology improves. Until then, videos are hands-down the most popular and lucrative business in the porn industry.
